Tenkara Drop Shotting

After some conversation with Chris from and some research on the web, I decided to give drop shotting a try.

It does several things. It simplifies fly tying……no weight needed on the fly. It allows for multiple fly rigs (I’m not totally convinced I actually catch more fish on these yet). It positions the bottom fly better in relation to the position of the fish, and it reduces hang ups on the bottom. In fact I had zero fly losses to the bottom today. It also allows for easy weight changes relative to water depth and speed without the need to retie your flies.

You’ll want to make sure this is legal in your state before you try this. It is in NY with some exceptions (for example lake Ontario tributaries) so do you research before you use this technique.

One final thing about this technique is that it will work with virtually any rod you use, spinning, fly, tenkara, etc.

Here are a few youtube videos that I think do a great job explaining the technique:

BIG Swimbaits vs. BIG Bass! Underwater Fishing Footage!

Giant Bass, Big Swimbaits, crystal clear water, EPIC FOOTAGE!! These fish are so aggressive they even hit the camera! We’ve captured a lot of underwater footage over the last few years but nothing like this! Watch these monsters come unglued on these big baits.

Its amazing to watch the interaction between these two bass. They seem to get super aggressive and calm back down, and in some instances calm each other down. Bait placement and movement seemed to be the key. Even movement that doesn’t appeal to use seemed to trigger a feeding or defensive response in these fish.

A Box Shaped Blues Bass Pattern

Here’s a fun blues bass pattern, based on the Pentatonic Minor (blues) scale.
It fits well over things like “Rock Me Baby” by BB King and “Tore Down” by Eric Clapton.
In part 1, I demonstrate the patterns in E based on the root note at the 7th fret of the A string.
I leave your right – or picking – hand techniques to each individual player, but this particular pattern will give your picking hand and wrist a good workout. After you get this pattern into your hands and head, you can use it all over the place in blues, rock, pop and country.
